Line Brushing a long haired dog.

February 19th, 2026

Here’s a helpful video + article combo that explains line brushing — the grooming technique used to brush a dog’s coat all the way down to the skin to remove mats, tangles, and loose hair:

This video shows how to part the coat and brush down to the skin in lines, which is the key to effective line brushing.

What “Line Brushing” Is

Line brushing is a grooming method where you work in small horizontal lines or strips of coat, parting the hair and brushing all the way down to the skin instead of just skimming the surface. This gets rid of hidden tangles and loose hairs that surface brushing misses.

Line Brushing Tutorial For Dogs – Soul Dog Synergy
This explains the technique, tools, and why line brushing is important:

  • Why it matters: Surface brushing only gets loose top hairs — mats and tangled fur can remain next to the skin if you don’t brush deeply.

  • How it works: Work in about 1-inch sections, mist the coat lightly, brush with the hair growth and then against it to reach the skin, and use a comb to check your work.

  • Tools: Slicker brushes, pin/combo combs, detangling spray or water.

  • Benefits: Prevents mats, stimulates skin oil distribution, reduces shedding, and keeps the coat healthier overall.

👉 Basic steps from the article:

  1. Make your dog comfortable.

  2. Part a small section of hair.

  3. Brush that section down to the skin, working with and against hair growth.

  4. Check with a comb — if it glides through, you’re done in that spot.

  5. Move to the next section and repeat.
